Let's get this blog rolling!

We've already gotten this off to a good start, we have a few bloggers. Just ahh keep inviting people.

Now. Does anyone like strobes? Does anyone know what strobes are?

Strobes are any off-camera lights that are triggered by your camera. As Nikon users, unless we are professional we generally use speedlights. That means we have a few options: The SB-600 or the Sb-800 (also available is the SU-800 commander and the R1 macro kit, which has two R200 speedlights. Don't worry about those). Basically you can light up a model or whatever you're shooting with these speedlights. There's a huge blog about strobes and even a group. So, with Nikon's CLS system you can sync all of these lights to the exact power you need and have them fire simultaneously. It's very handy and it's a whole other realm of photography that most amateurs have not explored. Anyone have thoughts on it?

Just another important reminder:

Some cameras cannot fire speedlights off camera. For the D40, the D50, the D1 series, the D2 series, and the D3 series, you need to use either a SB-800 or an SU-800 as a "commander". This flash goes on top of your camera and controls the strobes. If you use a D70/s, a D80, (I don't know about a D100) a D200, or a D300, your built-in pop up flash has the necessary functions as a commander. These were not included in the first series of cameras listed. So in order to use off-camera flashes you will need an SB-800 (this will be used as a flash and send the infared signal) or the SU-800 (this does not fire any light, it just sends the infared signal).

So. Basically since you have a D300 you don't need to have a commander flash. If you want you can get the SB-800, which is a very powerful speedlight which works with Nikon's CLS system and can be used on camera (on the hotshoe, with the function of commanding other flashes or by itself) or off the camera, controlled by the built-in flash. The SU-800 is just a thing that goes on top but does not emit any flash, just the infared signal to trigger other flashes. Or you could get the SB-600, can't command but it can be fired off or on camera. It just can't fire other flashes. That's the bottom line, there are pocket wizards and poverty wizards and all this other junk to worry about if you use, say, CANON =P
